The ASC provides support for Key Stage 3 pupils in Dunclug College who have a diagnosis of
autism. We follow the same curriculum as the rest of the College but are taught in the ASC for
our literacy-based subjects such as English, History, Geography, RE as well as Spanish, European
Studies, Careers and Business. Lessons are delivered in a way and at a pace which is accessible
to our pupils.
As part of our Nurture programme, pupils took part in art and craft activities for Armistice Day,
Christmas, Mother’s Day and Easter. We planted some hyacinths, tulips and mini daffodils as
well as weeding and tidying up the memorial garden and school entrance. Pupils celebrated
World Animal Day and made hedgehog cakes.
In English Year 8 pupils gave a Show and Tell presentation, Year 9 made PowerPoints on
Inspirational People and Year 10 wrote amazing Detective Stories. In Spanish and European
Studies pupils got the chance to try some Spanish tapas such as chorizo and tortilla. We also had
visits from the college’s 2 authors: Mr Crooks and Mr Fleck.
To celebrate Autism Awareness Month in April, ASC staff held a coffee morning and pupils
organised a Guess the number of Sweets in the Jar, visiting other classes to sell tickets. The final
total raised for AutismNI was £302.
