In the midst of the current educational crisis, we would do well to ask: “What is educa-
tion?” Our answers may provide insights that get to the heart of what matters for
21st century children and adults alike. Surely it goes beyond receiving or giving systematic
instruction, acquisition of knowledge, development of skills and preparation for the inevi-
table examinations! It gets to the heart of the matter – the hunger for knowledge… and
instilling the very desire to learn. Perhaps schools are not as good at that as they should
be!
It was Martin Luther King Junior who said, ‘Intelligence plus character – that is the goal of
true education’. He is referring to values – to things which cannot be taught and which are
timeless, to the hidden curriculum which infiltrates and weaves the very fabric of the time-
table. The list of such values is long: integrity, perceptive insight, intuition, natural talent,
creativity, competitiveness, sharing…
The pages of The Bellfort are an ideal vehicle for sharing the values we aim to instil in Dun-
clug College and I congratulate students featured in this issue on their innovation, creativi-
ty and growth during another year.
For those of you who leave your school for the last time, you will have mixed feelings:
thankfulness to see examinations passed and anticipation of all that the future may hold.
You will have memories to treasure of friendships that will last, of moments of fun and dis-
covery that will inspire you afresh with the memory. I trust that the values you have
shared in your journey here will remain with you throughout your lives, will grow in their
influence as time passes, and prove a rock to which you often return.
I take opportunity in closing, to acknowledge all who have contributed to this magazine.
Thanks also to our community, parents,
friends, businesses and fellow schools, for
your support in 2018.
